March 4, 1945 — Company I's Advance

Wartime history for the 3rd Battalion places Company I at the head of the battalion's March 4 attack toward Euskirchen. The line of departure was at the eastern edge of Nemmenich. Company I led a difficult cross-country advance through mud and steady rain, with the battalion encountering artillery, mortar, machine-gun, small-arms and sniper fire.

The unit history specifically records hostile fire around Ülpenich and Dürscheven and says a platoon from Company I, together with a platoon from Company L, entered northern Elsig while the remainder of the battalion continued toward Euskirchen.

Important: James Bone's exact place and time of loss have not yet been located in the records reviewed. The point shown below is an approximate combat-area marker for Company I's March 4 advance, not a claim that he fell at that exact spot.
